"PLEASE ... DON'T LET ME BE THE ONLY ONE!"

Notes to Editors
The architect behind the Daleks, Terry Nation is acknowledged as one of the creators of Doctor Who. Although he wrote half of the episodes of the first series, he left at the end of that series and launched his next BBC masterpiece, Blake's 7, about a mob of criminals on the run from the sinister Terran Federation in a stolen alien spaceship. Terry Nation died from emphysema in 1997.
This originally appeared at the end of this but has since been snipped. A baffling bit of Chinese Whispers.

Anyway - Survivors is coming back. What fun! Definitely a format applicable to modern times, how will the show be updated? I'm guessing it won't be a continuation at all, but if they did stick with the same characters who'd be taking on the short-lived Peter Bowles role? My vote: Peter Bowles! Abby would be played by Daniela Nardini, Greg by Matthew Macfadyen, Jenny by Jessica Hynes. Oh, and the cataclysm would have to be updated to play on current day paranoia. Is biological warfare too 2002? What do you think?
Comments:
It's been pointed out to me that this would make perfect sense were the writer to have written:

"Although he wrote half of the episodes of the first series of Survivors..."

Bird flu is always very now, isn't it.

Actually, that looks like someone has been doing their research using the original edition of 'Trivial Pursuit' were this screamer led to be losing a game way back when. I was playing with someone who actually believed what was written on the cards.

I too have faced down the Trivial Pursuit question - "Who created Doctor Who?"

My answer was : (deep breath)"It was Donald Wilson who wanted a science-fiction series for older children, Sydney Newman who fleshed out a concept involving a time-traveller and companions, CE "Bunny" Webber who refined the structure, Anthony Coburn who wrote the first episodes and a production team of Verity Lambert and David Whittaker who guided it to the screen...but the answer on the card is Terry Nation." The pink cheese I won for the answer was immediately, an not unreasonably, revoked for "smart-arsedness".

It gets worse, Philip Purser's Media Guardian obituary of Verity Lambert says that Doctor Who was created by Sydney Newman and Terry Nation!!

Its not difficult to get the right information - so why do some people find it SO hard to get right?

I think that it is fantastic news that Survivors is to make a return - the central concept is just as relevant today as it was in the 1970s.

I do hope that they don't go down the route of 'soapifying' the series too much though. I think that they should concentrate on producing a cracking good adventure series that deals with the mechanics of surviving.

Can't see it being a continuation though - they will surely reboot. They could have easily called it something completely different and avoided all of the negotiations with the Nation estate, which is why I reckon they will be keeping some of the character names and the series' central premise.

Looking forward to it immensely though.

Another casting suggestion...

What about the excellent David Crellin for Tom Price?
