CHERYL WEEDY
I mentioned ages ago how, while I still think Curb Your Enthusiasm is extremely funny, I can't always enjoy it as much as I'd like because I get frustrated by the supporting characters behaving in totally illogical and unreasonable ways. I know the whole concept of the series is that we're supposed to laugh at Larry's ineptitude, but he'd such an appealing character that you often can't help but root for him and take his side in arguments.
The same is true of the current series, currently being shown on More4, but I think there's another problem now - what on Earth has happened to Cheryl? Previously, Cheryl played an important part in the show - she was as embarrassed and appalled at the worst excesses of Larry's behaviour as everyone else, but the series always pointed out the pair had a great relationship and she would be smart and witty enough to help dig Larry out of most holes.
In this series, though, she seems to have become a humourless, rather unpleasant individual who seems to be in the show purely to start arguments and disapprove of Larry's behaviour. In fact I don't think she's even smiled once, in between chastising Larry for buying forbidden toilet roll, banning Jeff from their house or shouting at Larry without even waiting to hear his side of the story.
At the moment I'm actually rather relieved when Cheryl isn't on screen ready to show him up or cause problems. Does this carry on throughout the whole series?
Either way, for now, who'd have thought Susie would become the most appealing female character on this show?

I got slightly irritated last night when Richard Lewis chastised Larry for not making "a righty call". I can go with Larry having a schtick about "talking lefty", but why on earth would Richard take such offence at Larry actually doing it? Did I miss something?
And was the skinhead/chemo guy thing ever actually resolved? I wasn't actually sure whether it was just Larry mishearing because of his damaged ear. Maybe I just wasn't concentrating properly, as frankly I was a bit bored by last night's episode.

Larry and Cheryl split up anytime soon, so that's why she's behaving like she is. I don't like the thought of this. It could ruin the show.
I thought it was odd for Richard to notice which hand he used the phone with. Not even in the Curb-world would anyone notice.
Also, thought this episode failed to tie things together as well as normal. I expected the whole business of Larry claiming to have the runs in the restaurant would be overheard by the doctor with whom Larry refused to discuss his toilet habits.
Loved the argument between Larry and Richard about Cha Cha's analysis of his toilet times though. And last week's episode was absolute corker.

The series on the whole is pretty poor, but when they totally change the Larry/Cheryl dynamic it's like a breath of fresh air - David gets some great stuff out of the situation that doesn't just follow the old CYE formula.
Plus, I've always found Cheryl to be annoyingly 2D and harsh.

Incidentally, I thought last night's was loads better - Larry as a limo driver was hilarious, especially his rapid-fire conversation with John McEnroe.
In fact, Mac was brilliant in it. Quiz show host, commentator, comedy actor - is there nothing this man can't do? And, er, he plays tennis quite well too.

I loved the concept of Richard getting annoyed by a lefty call. "I want a righty call".
I've seen the remainder of the series, and it really kicks into gear in the second half of the series. Not only does Larry find the time to regain his form, he even brings Steve Coogan's form up with him. And without building it up too much, he finds a proper way to bring a close to a series.

Just as an aside, Mr Norman really really fancies Cheryl. Bless. I'm thinking of never smiling again.
Cheryl's character has probably changed to fit in with the fact that Larry David has split from his real wife. Coincidentally she's an environmental campaigner - so it looks like Larry likes to bring in a lot of stuff from his real life.
