FLEETWOOD MAC SAID TO BE "QUITE PLEASED, REALLY"

Formula 1 is moving back to the BBC, although it seems nobody has managed to uncover why ITV are dropping it midway through their contract or, indeed, F1 are dropping ITV. The timing is a bit odd, given that Britain has, in Lewis Hamilton, a driver capable of winning the world title for the first time in a decade.

The question is, who's going to present it? Steve Rider left the BBC in a huff to front ITV's coverage, so it's unlikely he'll be welcomed back. Media Guardian ridiculously claims that "Gabby Logan, Gary Lineker and John Inverdale are all being touted," but it's unlikely to be any of those three, and it's definitely not going to be Gary Lineker.

My first thought on hearing the news this morning was that Richard Hammond should get the gig. For one thing, Bernie Ecclestone would surely approve of someone even shorter than him doing the job.

I'd also like to see James May doing the grid walk ("Kimi, a word? Oh cock") but that's possibly less likely.

It also remains to be seen who'll be commentating, but despite everyone on the BBC Sport Editors blog blindly imploring them to "get Murray Walker back" it's not going to happen. He's 85!
Comments:
Murray Walker mentioned during his interview on BBC Breakfast this morning that he'd heard that Bernie Ecclestone had gone to the BBC to offer it to them.

I was under the (almost certainly false) impression that Hamster doesn't actually like F1 very much...

I liked ITV saying they'd dropped it "for commercial reasons" - I'm not sure what "commercial reason" involves dropping the one programme that appeals to the ABC1 men ITV are desperate to hit. What a ludicrous statement. If it's for scheduling reasons, why buy the bloody Boat Race?

Reading the Digital Spy forums, some people appear to be clamouring for Matthew Lorenzo to get it, based on his performance on Sky's short-lived PPV F1 programmes a few years back. Matthew Lorenzo!

I think this is great news for the Beeb, because I like the BBC, although as far as I'm concerned Formula One is the world's worst sport. When's this Champions League contract going to be announced?

Oh balls, ITV have got it. That'll bugger up Corrie, won't it?

Richard Hammnd hates F1 he has said time and time again on TG that its boring and pointless.

David Croft will be the main commentator, most likely with Brundle brought in

Suzi Perry must be a shoo-in to present it having done the bikes

Have we all seen the enormous Hamster pic on the front of the Times?

Crikey.

I've got a funny feeling they might integrate all the Top Gear presenters into it somehow. I also reckon you'll suddenly see a lot of F1 coverage within Top Gear too.

Not what I'd hope for though. I for one would love to see Claire Balding doing the grid walk, I can't see Bernie or Lewis dodging out of her way when she's in full flight.

And I for one have no desire to see Murray Walker involved. He was always a shockingly bad commentator. I'd nick someone from Eurosport to do it.

The whole Times piece about Hammond being a shoo-in for the job seems to be based on the BBC's buyer referring to the show in an interview, and that article also seems to think Lineker and Hansen will be forced to leave the corporation now they haven't replaced the FA Cup with the Champions League rights.

As for who will present it, assuming the Beeb don't flog MotoGP off to make way I imagine Perry will stay there. If promoting from within Jake Humphrey might be their best bet.
