COUNTDONE?
Bloody hell. Des O'Connor's quitting Countdown!

"A straw poll of the Mirror.co.uk office came up with a number of ideal candidates to replace O'Connor and partner Countdown stalwart maths genius Carol Vorderman.
They include Michael Parkinson..."
Dear goodness, no!

If it was John and Gregg, it'd be the same contestants every day for two weeks, though? It's a great thought, mind. "I wanna see vowels, I wanna see consonants! These are dictionary-qualidee words!"
Aspel would be ideal, but he seems happy enough in semi-retirement these days. The problem with the likes of him, Lynam, O'Connor et al is that they don't need the money and seemingly they don't need the hassle.
Someone on DigitalSpy said it was going to be Harry Gration...

I suppose the qualities required for a suitable Twice-Nightly replacement are intelligence, and a respect for that of others, coupled with a humility that borders on self-deprecation, a lighthearted sense of whimsy, interest in the arcane and a commitment to the Fourth Channel. A history of news presentation would also be a good strength.
By (some of) these criterior, Jon Snow springs to mind. He can even put "suitable tie collection" on his CV.
Ignoring the penultimate, John Craven and "Let's Play" seem good choices. For a non-news-presenter, Howard Goodall?
Sadly I doubt my first choice, Adrian Chiles, can spare the time.

Hmm, I'm not so sure. Channel 4 has a history of completely failing to put a programme out of its misery, or knowing when to call a halt to something that's clearly on the ropes. The Big Breakfast, The Word, Brookside, Shameless, Eurotrash, Big Brother... I reckon they'll press on, simply because they haven't got any other ideas.
In the year where YTV celebrates its 40th anniversary, why not go back to the source of Countdown's greatest presenter and pick Alan Hardwick as the new guy.
They're talking about this on TalkSPORT this afternoon and there seems to be a lot of support for Mylene Klass as the new Carol and Mike Parry as the new Des.
